I am passionate about cultivating AI literacy by making playful tools and learning environments, empowering people to assert their agency against various algorithmic decisions made about them. As a researcher working at the intersection of human-computer interaction, human-centered AI, and creative computing, my ambition is to give each person their own oars to navigate algorithmic waters with both purpose and imagination.
I pursue this line of work in several ways:
- I employ computational analysis to investigate how algorithmic systems like Twitter (X) and DALL-E can suppress voices from marginalized communities and cultures.
- I design data privacy tools to empower people to critically engage with their digital footprints. (See Algorithmic Mirror)
- I teach programming courses for girls and engage in policy adovocation to make sure equitable access to STEM education
I explore ways to close the gender gap in STEM education particularly in Japan, where only 3% of the girls "aspire to a career in ICT". Previously, I have worked at Waffle, designing and delivering programming course reaching 120+ female students across rural Japan. Outside of work, I am a national champion of karuta— Japanese poetry card game—, and exploring how technologies can help me share the beauty of Japanese poetry across linguistic and cultural boundaries.
Here's the video of karuta, featuring my high school.
